The SAFE Act requires criminal background checks be conducted on both state-licensed and federally registered mortgage loan originators.  Federally regulated institutions are required to review the results of FBI criminal background checks performed on their mortgage loan originators as part of the federal registration process.  NMLS is sponsoring a professionally moderated conference call and webinar for institutions interested in learning how the information contained in criminal background checks is compiled and how to understand that information.

What will participants learn?

  • What information is contained in a criminal background check result
  • How criminal history information is used
  • How to read and interpret a criminal background check result
  • How criminal history information should used and disseminated by institutions

Who should attend?

  • All employees of federally chartered or insured institutions who have the responsibility to review Criminal History Record Information (CHRI) through NMLS for purposes of registering mortgage loan originators.
  • State mortgage regulatory agencies who have or will have access to FBI Criminal History Records through NMLS
