 Special Accommodations

In compliance with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), reasonable testing accommodations with modifications and aids will be provided to candidates with documented disabilities.

To apply for reasonable testing accommodations, please complete the following two forms:

Additional information, such as clinical diagnostic data, may be requested in order to clarify the nature of the disability and the testing need. Data should be no more than five years old, and must confirm the diagnosis of the disability. Documentation must also establish the candidate's current functioning and need for a reasonable testing accommodation.

Below are the most Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact the NMLS Accommodations team at 1-877-416-6657.

Q. What types of special accommodations are available?
A. NMLS considers each special accommodation request on an individual case-by-case basis. The disability and the extent of its impact on your daily functioning will determine the accommodation(s) that can be provided. Several accommodations are listed on the Special Accommodation Eligibility Questionnaire. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the NMLS Accommodations team at 1-877-416-6657.
Q. What is the turnaround time for getting a special accommodation approved?
A. The Special Accommodations team works closely with the test delivery vendor to ensure proper compliance in providing any approved reasonable testing accommodation. All reasonable efforts will be made to render a decision on accommodation requests within five (5) business days.
Q. Does an individual need to pay for a test enrollment before they can apply for a special accommodation?
A. Yes, you must have a valid enrollment window for any SAFE MLO test component for which you would like the special accommodation. You will need to wait for approval of your request from NMLS prior to scheduling an appointment.
Q. If an individual has already scheduled the test, can they still request a special accommodation?
A. Yes, however the scheduled appointment must be cancelled before your accommodation can be considered.  NMLS requires testing candidates to cancel or reschedule their test no later than 12 p.m. local time (at the location where the test is being taken) two business days prior to the scheduled appointment. We are unable to review a special accommodation request for any test enrollment window that has an existing test appointment.
Q. What forms are needed to request a special accommodation?
A. When requesting a special accommodation for the first time, you will be required to submit both the Eligibility Questionnaire and the Verification Request forms. Once you have been approved by NMLS for special accommodation(s) and you wish to maintain these exact accommodations for future testing, you will only be required to submit the Eligibility Questionnaire for each additional test request. If circumstances change and you require different or additional accommodations, you will be required to complete both forms and provide medical documentation, as on your initial request.
